Team Kiss Me, I Have Epilepsy is back!! And we are geared to kick some fund raising butt!!

I had my first seizure when I was 11 years old, and it was the scariest day of my life. Every day for the past 21 years I have taken medication to control the seizures. Despite the many side effects, and the staggering cost of medication ($615 a month for generic), I am fortunate that my seizures have been largely controlled. However, for many people with Epilepsy this is not the case, which is why research and funding is critical to helping everyone afflicted by this disease.

Epilepsy was the featured story in a recent edition of Newsweek (April 20th; if you have a few dollars and like to read, I suggest picking it up). It discusses the impact the disease has in the US, and why it’s so important to find a cure. The issue gave me hope that it would increase awareness, but also reminded me of the somber statistics regarding Epilepsy and how fortunate I have been so far in my life. Here are just a few…

• Up to 50,000 people die each year from seizures and related causes.
• The risk of sudden death from Epilepsy is 24 times greater than the general population.
• There are 200,000 new cases each year, and more than 3 million Americans are affected by it, which is greater than the number of people with multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and Parkinson’s disease COMBINED.
• There is a rise in the expected incidence of Epilepsy among the veterans of the Iraq war who have sustained traumatic head injuries while protecting our county.

If you have $5, $10 or a million dollars, we ask that you support our team with a donation. Each dollar that you pledge will help the 3 million of us that battle this disease every day, and hopefully will someday help find a cure. Please remember that some employers match your donations, so you should check their policies when donating. Also, if you would like to join our team and walk with us at Green Lake on June 20th, we would love your support!

Thanks again – Toni, Mark & Owen
