Join Our Team!
Dear Friends and Family,
I was diagnosed with epilepsy over seven years ago. With the aid of my incredibly supportive doctors, I now have a Vagal Nerve Stimulator implanted in my chest, I have undergone multiple EEGs, and I have tried a variety of medicinal cocktails.
Despite these efforts, my seizures have never been completely controlled. I continue to have tonic-clonic, myoclonic, and absence seizures. As a result, the experiences of finishing high school, attending and graduating from college, and beginning my first real job have been far from average.
Nevertheless, I maintain a positive outlook with the hope that future research will result in new treatments for me and others.
I also remember that of the three million Americans who currently have epilepsy, I am one of the lucky ones. I have the ability to care for myself, to make a living for myself, and to be an independent adult.
Not all of these three million Americans are as lucky as I am. Many experience co-existing medical illnesses and cognitive difficulties, and are unable to benefit from the educational and employment opportunities available to most of us. Many are also subject to the social and employment discrimination that is often tied to a stigmatized illness like epilepsy. These individuals especially benefit from the employment counseling, networking and support groups, medication assistance for those without insurance, seizure management training for emergency medical personnel and school nurses, legislative advocacy, educational seminars for the general public, the summer camp for kids with epilepsy, and much more provided by Epilepsy Foundation Northwest.
EFNW is entirely dependent on donations from people like you. So please help me to raise awareness and funds for Epilepsy Foundation Northwest by supporting the 2009 Run/Walk for Epilepsy at Green Lake in Seattle on June 20.
If you would like to walk with us and make a donation at the same time, please click the "Join Our Team" link at the top of this page.
You may also make additional donations from this page, either to my personal page or to the General Team Donation, by clicking the appropriate name on the list of Team Members.
My desire to help others with epilepsy stems from my personal experiences and from the acceptance, love, and support that my friends, family, and coworkers have demonstrated on my behalf. I hope to see you all at the Walk!!
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Thank you so much for your support,
Miranda
